Getting To Chile

Where is Chile?

Chile is in South America

  • From the United States, you can go to Chile from Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Atlanta, Forth Worth, or DC airports.

  • Chile is not on the way to anything. People going to Chile take a flight that goes to Chile, period. There are no layovers and no way to combine with other flights.

  • The only international airport is in the capital, Santiago’s “Nuevo Pudahuel” airport

  • Delta, American Airlines, and sometimes United fly there.
Other airlines that fly to Chile are Copa, Avianca, Jet Smart, Air Canada, and AeroMexico.
Chile also has one international airline, and it’s called Latam.

  • When booking your flight from the USA, it will be more convenient to look for a direct flight from either LAX, NYC, or MIA airports, and book your own connection separately.

  • I personally always book South West because you get your checked suitcase at no extra cost (and you will need to bring all your hiking gear to Chile).

  • I like booking my connecting flight in the morning because most flights to Chile are overnight. American, and Latam flights nonstop (which means, less hustle with layover visas, and less risk of losing your checked baggage).

  • Personally, even when NYC is closer to me, I prefer flying from Miami, because the trip from Miami to Santiago is only 8 hours.

ARRIVING IN CHILE:

  • The flight to Chile can be exhausting, so if you have time, allow yourself one day to rest in Santiago before continuing the trip to the South.

  • There is a Holiday Inn. right at the airport. You walk less than a quarter of a block to get to the hotel once you exit the main airport.

  • If rest time is needed before continuing the trip, I suggest booking one night there, this way you will be saving money on transportation/parking and especially you will save time.

  • If you rather stay outside of the airport area and explore a bit of the city life, keep in mind that Uber is not allowed at the airport, which means to exit the airport you will need a taxi or rent a car (which I do not recommend at all).

  • Santiago is divided into “Comunas” (these are like big neighborhoods).
If you prefer to stay outside the airport, these are some of the Comunas that are safest to stay at:
    - Providencia
    - Las Condes
    - Vitacura

  • I live in Lastarria, and its a great neighborhood to stay at. I like it because it is walking distance to Santiago’s downtown areas, the government palace and a few museums. It has lots of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops.

  • Some hotels here are:

    Cumbres Lastarria
    Hotel
    Foresta
    Hotel Sommelier
    Hotel Ciudad de Vitoria

When flying to Chile always pick the window seat!.
Landing there has some of the best views :)

Safe Travels!
